General description of the collection: Standing operation procedure (SOP) no. 18, ordnance service in the communication zone was published by Headquarters, United States (US) Army, European Theater of Operations (ETO). The SOP is divided into five volumes. The first volume is entitled, "General" and covers general definitions and descriptions of Class II, IV, and V supplies, maintenance, evacuation and recovery of captured and Allied material, vehicle movement and assembly, requisition procedures, purchasing, contracting and civilian labor. Volume two is entitled, "Ammunition depot operation" and covers planning, layout, reports, security, supplies and regulations regarding ammunition depots. Volume three is entitled, "General supply depot operation" and provides the same information as the third volume. Volume four is entitled, "Vehicle assembly plant operation" and covers information regarding policy, layout, storage and issue of cases, servicing, final inspection and inventory control. Volume five is entitled, "Maintenance evacuation and recovery" and provides information on shop location, assignment of units, inspection, third and fourth echelon maintenance shops, base shops, and salvage. All of the volumes have appendices of blank forms and reports.
